Schools Considering Junk Food Limits

A school district in Boulder is considering a junk-food policy.

The Boulder Valley School District board was discussing a draft Tuesday that says kindergartners through eighth graders wouldn't be involved in, or have access to, the sale of sweets and sodas at school-sponsored events or fundraisers.

It would discourage junk food at school parties. Ads of unhealthy food and drinks would be banned on places like scoreboards and school publications. Growth hormones, hydrogenated oils and high-fructose corn syrup would be kept out of meals offered to students.

Bake sales would be allowed -- in moderation.

Still, the district's interim director of nutrition services, Ann Cooper, says she's not looking to be "the cupcake police."

Good. While they're at it, maybe they should consider giving the kids some daily PE and a longer recess break. I'm not convinced that junk food is the cause of all the obesity and concentration (excessive ADD/ADHD diagnosises) issues. Kids need to be able to run around! They need exercise to tire them out and clear their heads so that they can focus in class. I agree with removing the junk food, but their menues need to be seriously revamped as well. It is cheaper and healthier to prepare them a real pot roast, complete with mashed potatoes, and veggies, or a full spaghetti dinner, etc., than to order all of the easy mass-produced cafeteria food that they're fed now. No more mystery meats! Make the MEALS more appetizing and nutritious and the kids won't run off to the vending machines to satisfy their unsatisfied hunger.

CHILDREN'S EATING HABITS SHOULD START AT HOME. IF THE PARENTS ARE LACKING IN THAT DEPARTMENT...THE CHILDREN WILL FOLLOW THE LEAD. IT'S PITIFUL TO SEE SO MANY OVERWEIGHT, UNHEALTHY CHILDREN. THE SCHOOLS SHOULD HAVE HEALTHY FOOD, THERE IS NO REASON TO HAVE JUNK IN THE SCHOOL.
