Most Americans think schools are putting too much emphasis on the wrong subjects.
More than 50% of the parents and other adults quizzed for an Associated Press survey released this morning think schools are doing just a fair job of getting students ready for the real world.
Most think American youngsters are either just keeping up with kids in the rest of the world or are falling behind.
As for what should be emphasized, the biggest chunk of people -- more than a-third -- say math. English is a distant second at 21%, followed by such subjects as art, music and science.
One teacher says parents probably think math isn't getting enough attention because its the subject they themselves feel most intimidated by. Those sampled in the AP survey rate education behind the economy and gas prices in importance, placing it slightly ahead of Iraq.
