A new study finds the performance gap between boys and girls in math is less pronounced in countries where there's more gender equality.

Boys scored higher than girls on a math test given to children worldwide. The study examined the results and found that in societies where women and men have similar rights and opportunities, girls are as good as boys in math.

The United States fell in the middle of the pack in terms of both equality for women and the gender gap in math.

Among 40 countries studied, Iceland was the only one where girls did better than boys on the math test.

The study was published in the journal Science.
