Woodland Park held a city meeting Saturday to discuss the latest developments with the Waldo Canyon fire.
Video of Saturday's meeting, and all other city meetings held since the fire began, can be found http://www.city-woodlandpark.org/home/.
Some highlights:
-4 p.m. briefing at Summit Elementary for those wanting more information. Officials emphasized that those wanting more information about the Ute Pass area should make it a point to attend.
-All existing evacuation orders still stand.
-City of Woodland Park working closely with Teller County Sheriff Mike Ensminger, currently the incident commander for the Teller County side of the fire. He is Colorado Springs Saturday getting a briefing from incident commander Rich Harvey.
-The section of the fire that carries the biggest threat for Woodland Park is the part southwest of Rampart Reservoir. The reservoir itself is holding, and crews are about to attack a nearby spot fire. A plan is currently in place in case the fire gets too close to Woodland Park, which was not mentioned as an imminent threat during the press conference.
-Vehicles seen at the local Walmart are employees. Walmart got special permission to allow their employees to continue working so that they can have the store ready for evacuees when they return home and need to stock up. The reason Woodland Park police have approved this is that they know where the employees are in case of a catastrophic event. They would not know if random people went back into their neighborhoods and would not be able to retrieve residents in case of an emergency, so for the public's own safety, residents must stay away from evacuated zones.
-Black Hills Energy has a plan to turn off gas if there is an emergency
-Woodland Park/Teller County has tremendous federal resources, similar to the Colorado Springs side.
-No structures have been damaged in Green Mountain Falls, Cascade, or Chipita Park. Officials are feeling confident about the containment lines along Ute Pass.
