As donations continue to roll in, the United Way says a total of $580,990 has been raised for the Waldo Canyon Fire Victims' Assistance Fund.
United Way President Jd Dallager calls the support "overwhelming" and "heartwarming."
All of the funds will stay local in the Pikes Peak region and will be spent to directly assist people impacted by the Waldo Canyon Fire. A board of five or seven people will be formed next week to review the funding requests and made decisions.
Much of the money raised was when KKTV 11 News joined with local charities, entertainers and media outlets to raise money for the victims of the Waldo Canyon Fire. The primary component was a concert and telethon, dubbed “A Community Rises,” was held on July 4.
$85,407 came from contributions at the concert. $97,215 was donated by phone and $95,760 was donated online during the concert.
Another $125,000 came from the El Pomar Foundation. Other funds came from various people and organizations.
$177,608 other dollars came from individuals, foundations, small businesses, and corporations.
The concert featured the Colorado Springs Philharmonic along with appearances by the Flying W Wranglers, Michael Martin Murphey and Flash Cadillac. KKTV 11 News Anchor Dianne Derby joined with other television news anchors as masters of ceremony.
Tickets for the one-night-only concert sold out days in advance.
