He's accused of burglarizing a home left empty during the Waldo Canyon Fire evacuations.

Cameron Moore, 20, stood before a judge for the first time Thursday morning. Moore has been charged in connection with at least one break-in, and is a person of interest in several others. Police say 42 homes and 43 vehicles were burglarized during the fire evacuations.

Moore was to be advised of his charges Thursday, but waived his advisement, meaning the charges were not read aloud in court. He will return to court at 8:30 a.m. October 4 for a bond hearing and preliminary hearing.

Moore is currently being held at CJC on a $50,000 bond.

Kenneth Patterson was one of the thousands forced to leave his home as the fire swept through parts of Colorado Springs. When he was finally allowed back inside, he knew something wasn't right.

"As soon as I got upstairs, I noticed that my back patio door was open and that everything had been rifled through. There were drawers open and things all over the floor."

According to arrest papers, Moore allegedly stole DVDs, Broncos memorabilia and an antique sword, then tried to trade them for drugs and pawn them for money.

Patterson told 11 News that the burglar even went through his fridge and helped himself to a bottle of water.

Police say that was a common M.O. in many of the burglaries. In a number of cases, crooks left bottles of water, fruit juice and beer lying around the homes. These are now being tested for DNA, which police hope will lead to other arrests.

The whole incident was violating, Patterson said, particular occurring at such a vulnerable time.

"Possessions are possessions, but leaving them behind and not being able to protect your home was hard enough. Coming home to it was even harder."

District Attorney Dan May is on record stating that he'll pursue the harshest penalties for those who burglarized fire evacuees.
