People living on the northwest side of Colorado Springs have been reporting brown water in the weeks since the Waldo Canyon fire, Colorado Springs Utilities confirmed to 11 News.
According to CSU, the water is unpleasant looking, but perfectly safe. Utility workers have been testing the water on a weekly basis, and have found the water quality unchanged. Neighborhoods primarily reporting the issue are those in or closest to the burn area: Mountain Shadows, Peregrine, Pinon Valley. CSU says that the problem has been intermittent, with the company receiving a high volume of calls some weeks and none on others.
CSU tells 11 News the coloration is due to increased water usage since the fire, which has stirred up sediment in water lines, causing the brown color. They advise residents noticing this issue to run their water for five to 10 minutes, which seems to be effective in clearing the water. If that doesn't work, call CSU's customer service center at 448-4800.
