Smoldering Homes Still A Concern For Firefighters

Three thousand people remain evacuated from their homes in Colorado Springs.

Most are desperate to return. A group of frustrated evacuees confronted fire officials at Sunday's press conference, pleading to hear word on when their neighborhoods would be reopened.

But fire crews stress that though the worst of the fire seems to be over, there is still a lot of work to do before the evacuated areas are safe.

Firefighters tell 11 News that although there aren't any active fires burning in the evacuated areas, there is still high fire potential, and they have had some close calls. Even the homes that were lost in the fire are still cause for concern for fire crews. Some of them may still be smoldering with the ability to start new fires within neighborhoods.

Firefighters are working hard to patrol the evacuated area and take care of any areas that may still present dangers.

This is not the only reason why people are still evacuated, but it is a big concern.

Fire officials are optimistic, however, that the remaining evacuations could be lifted soon--possibly as early as Monday.
