Smoke Near Blodgett Peak Keeps Waldo Canyon Fire At 98% Containment

Officials hoped to reach 100 percent containment on the Waldo Canyon fire over the weekend, but a stubborn spot near Blodgett Peak has kept containment stalled at 98 percent for the third straight day.

Visible smoke was spotted Saturday in that area, forcing officials to wait until Sunday to rule on full containment. Sunday, an aerial tour of the fire area was scheduled, but rainy weather made the first attempt inconclusive and grounded the second attempt.

Officials say a couple of smokes are on a very steep face of Blodgett Peak, overhanging an area that has been left unburned, while another smoke is an 8 foot deep chip pile near a quarry site around the same area. The smoke will be visible to those on the northwest side of town; officials urge the public to not report the smoke.
