Belinda Wells-Yates and Shane Garrett

During a preliminary hearing Thursday, an undercover agent testified about the events that led to the arrest of two people for allegedly committing burglary during the Waldo Canyon Fire evacuations.

11News was in the courtroom for Belinda Wells-Yates and Shane Garrett's preliminary hearing. Both were arrested for the burglary of an evacuated home in Colorado Springs. The pair also allegedly possessed methamphetamine at the time of their arrests in Monument.

The undercover agent of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation reported that he had known Wells-Yates prior to the alleged burglary because of his work on a case involving identification documents. The agent says she called him on June 26 and said she was “chasing fire” and was going to be “hitting houses” in the Rockrimmon neighborhood.

The agent says the suspects met him at the Sundance Hotel in Monument under the pretense of selling some of the stolen items. Garrett was driving and Wells-Yates was in the passenger seat.

The undercover agent testified that he asked the suspects how they'd gotten into the houses without setting off an alarm. He says they told him they crawled through a dog door.

The pair was allegedly in possession of stolen checkbooks, guitars, and electronics.

After hearing the testimony Thursday, a judge decided there was probable cause to send both suspects to trial.
