Residents of the Mountain Shadows community, where several hundred homes were lost to the Waldo Canyon Fire, will be allowed to drive into the area and visit their properties on July 1.

The visit will only be open to residents who live within the boundaries of 30th Street on the south, Centennial Boulevard on the east and Flying W Ranch Road on the north. There will be two checkpoints for the north and south division of the neighborhood.

The north division is defined as Chuckwagon Road south of Wolfe Ranch and South of Flying W Ranch Road west of Centennial Boulevard. They can check in at Eagle View Middle School at 1325 Vindicator Drive.

The south division is defined as south of Chuckwagon Road but north of 30th Street and west of Centennial Boulevard. They can check in at the Verizon Building, the old MCI facility, at 2424 Garden of the Gods Road.

Access will only be allowed between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Check in begins at 8:00 a.m. and everyone must evacuate again at 6:00 p.m.

Residents are reminded that the evacuation area remains potentially hazardous. The city advises evacuees to wear protective clothing, including closed-toed shoes. Additionally, no smoking or open flames are allowed.

Some properties are damaged or destroyed and will be surrounded by police tape. No entry is allowed past the tape.

The city will be revealing details for how residents can clean out refrigerators and other items later Saturday.

The Red Cross offers these tips for returning home after a wildfire:

-Do not enter your home until fire officials say it is safe.
-Use caution when entering burned areas as hazards may still exist, including hot spots, which can flare up without warning.
-Avoid damaged or fallen power lines, poles and downed wires.
-Watch for ash pits and mark them for safety—warn family and neighbors to keep clear of the pits also.
-Watch animals closely and keep them under your direct control. Hidden embers and hot spots could burn your pets’ paws or hooves.
-Follow public health guidance on safe cleanup of fire ash and safe use ofmasks.
-Wet debris down to minimize breathing dust particles.
-Wear leather gloves and heavy soled shoes to protect hands and feet.
-Cleaning products, paint, batteries and damaged fuel containers need to be disposed of properly to avoid risk.

Ensure your food and water are safe.
-Discard any food that has been exposed to heat, smoke or soot.
-Do NOT ever use water that you think may be contaminated to wash dishes, brush teeth, prepare food, wash hands, make ice or make baby formula.
