A new phase of the investigation into the Waldo Canyon Fire is underway. A team of investigators is adding lab work to their process as they continue working to diagnose the cause of the state’s most destructive fire.

Investigators tell 11News that the lab work may take several months. It will consist of processing and sifting through minerals and ashes collected from the burn area.

Earlier this month, investigators reported they knew where the fire began. They’re continuing to look for additional clues about how the fire began.

Although the Sheriff’s Office and other authorities are not divulging where the fire began, dispatch tapes suggest it may have started near the popular Waldo Canyon trail - and might have started hours earlier than once believed.

While the investigation continues, the City of Colorado Springs is crafting a rebuilding plan. Mayor Steve Bach and members of the City Council are scheduled to meet Wednesday. They are expected to discuss making policy about wildfire mitigation and consider rules for fire resistant materials for new homes.
