The Waldo Canyon fire entered the Colorado Springs city limits Tuesday evening, endangering the Air Force Academy. A number of cadets were evacuated.

This comes as 1,000 cadet appointees arrive in the area for in-processing, scheduled for Thursday morning.

Understanding that incoming cadets and their families are filled with questions with this unexpected turn of events, the Air Force Academy issued a statement. Full text is below:

Approximately 1,000 Air Force Academy cadet appointees are expected to arrive in the area for in-processing, which is currently scheduled for Thursday morning. Air Force Academy officials want to assure the public that there is a plan in place to take care of all cadets, to include appointees.

Bed and Breakfast host families, who plan to meet their appointees on the Academy, are asked to meet their appointees at the Cadet Field House instead of Doolittle Hall at the originally scheduled time. In addition, cadet appointees arriving at the airport whose Bed and Breakfast families have been impacted by the evacuation will receive instructions at the airport from Association of Graduate members, who will be identified as such.

At this time, cadet in-processing is still scheduled for Thursday, however the reporting location has changed to the Cadet Field House instead of Doolittle Hall. Appointees should report at their previously scheduled report time. All appointees should enter the Academy through the North Gate to access the Cadet Field House.

Any changes or updates on in-processing and cadet appointee reporting instructions will be posted on the USAFA Web page, Click on the “Waldo Canyon Fire” tab.
