You might not think about summer as a time for health issues beyond sunburns. But there is an illness that makes its way around this time of year... herpangina.

That's what Dr. Joseph Corrigan is seeing. He's with Colorado Springs health partners on the west side of town. Herpangina is a viral throat infection that affects mostly babies and toddlers in the summer time. Dr. Corrigan says it can make kids quite ill, with fever for days and ulcers on the palate in the back of the throat. He says most people think it's teething because it hurts kids to swallow and the kids drool a lot. Dr. Corrigan says it's transmitted by respiratory and fecal contamination... and lasts about a week. He says there's no specific treatment. But controlling the fever and pain can make a big difference for your kiddo. And since it hurts for them to swallow, you have to be extra careful to make sure they don't become dehydrated.

And that's an issue for all of us right now. Dr. Steven Reich with Evans Army Hospital on Fort Carson mentioned that. We're all heading into what can be a fun, but busy Fourth of July weekend. So make sure you and the whole family are getting enough fluids.
