It’s that time of year when doctors don’t see as many trends in the office. And now the focus becomes preventative.

Dr. Steven Reich with Evans Army Hospital on Fort Carson wants to remind parents about these specific issues… sunscreen, bike helmets and fireworks.

Of course the sunscreen issue is a big one here in Colorado Springs. It’s important we wear it all year round, but especially in the summertime. So whether you’re headed to the pool or just playing in the park – make sure you put some on.

When it comes to biking, it can be a great family activity. But, as Dr. Reich reminds… it’s important to stay safe and wear a helmet. According to safekids.org, 99 kids are killed every year and 254,000 injured as bicyclists. The best prevention tool is a helmet. So make sure your child is wearing one every time they ride.

And with the 4th of July just around the corner… you may already be hearing fireworks in your neighborhood. They’re illegal in El Paso County. But if you take part in a celebration where fireworks are involved, here are a few tips from the National Council on Fireworks Safety… first off – always have water ready if you are shooting fireworks. Wear safety goggles. And never relight a “dud.”
