Tis the season for lots of illnesses going around. This week, there are three things to talk about.
First, in the springs, mono is going around. It’s also known as mononucleosis tonsillitis. This information comes from Dr. Doug Clark with Mountain View Medical Group. He's on the east side of town.
Here's a look at the symptoms: a painful, red sore throat, fever, fatigue, swollen neck glands, nausea and headache. As you can see, the symptoms don’t look like that of a cold.
Dr. Clark says treatment is symptomatic. Sometimes, a short course of steroids is called for. But definitely get lots of rest, eat a good diet and don't share drinks with anyone.
Also going around this week... two illnesses in Pueblo West. We're getting this info from Dr. Kasey McCreight with Parkview Family Medicine. He's seeing quite a bit of strep in both adults and kids.
Symptoms include a sore throat, fever, swollen lymph nodes and no cough. Sometimes you'll notice white spots on the throat and tonsils. You might also experience abdominal pain and diarrhea.
Strep is usually treated with a course of antibiotics. Symptoms can subside within just a few days
The other illness going around pueblo this week is acute bronchitis.
The symptom you'll notice first is a cough that starts dry and then becomes more productive. Treatment includes rest, lots of fluids, cough suppressants and good hygiene to prevent it from spreading. In the most severe cases, a chest x-ray may be needed to rule out a more serious health issue like pneumonia, which typically requires antibiotics.
