It's the most wonderful time of the year. So you definitely don't want the kiddos in your life to get sick. But there are a couple of things going around right now that you need to know about. That's according to Dr. Steven Reich with Evans Army Hospital on Fort Carson.
First off, he says croup is still a problem. Symptoms include congestion, fever, difficulty breathing, a barking cough and hoarseness. It usually lasts less than a week. You can help with a humidifier, steam from a hot shower and over the counter meds for the fever. But you'll want to watch for dehydration. And if things get worse, go to the doctor.
The other issue going around our kids right now is that nasty stomach bug, otherwise known as gastroenteritis. Dr. Reich says the main symptom is vomiting. It's also characterized by nausea and abdominal pain. That can be followed by diarrhea. The best advice is to talk to your doctor. There could be big issues with dehydration and of course, you don't want to pass this on to anyone else. It is very contagious.
