It's more than just cold and flu-like symptoms that are going around these days. It could be turning into something much more serious for some.

So, in this week’s What’s Going Around, we’ll look at the wider issue and then narrow it down.

The issue affecting most is an illness that brings on upper respiratory issues in both kids and adults. We're learning about that from Dr. Melissa Devalon with Colorado Springs Health Partners. She says it shows up with symptoms like a runny nose, sore throat and a cough. But it can also present with mild diarrhea. She says it lasts about a week and doesn't require any special treatment. Just make sure to get plenty of rest and fluids.

But if symptoms like these don't go away and you find yourself feeling sick longer than about a week, it could be more serious.

The doctors with EmergiCare gave us a heads about that because they're seeing pneumonia. That can develop from bacteria, viruses or fungi. It can also develop from complications with another infection, like the flu or bronchitis. The symptoms with pneumonia can include fever and chills, or even low-body temperature in older adults, cough, shortness of breath, chest pain with breathing, headache and fatigue.

Physicians say it's important to be seen if you have symptoms like this that just aren't going away. When you go to the doctor, you'll be examined, there will probably be lab work and a chest x-ray. Then you may be given antibiotics or even breathing treatments to help with your symptoms.

Doctors say this infection needs to be treated as soon as possible to help you get back on your feet. So if those symptoms just aren't going away, it's time to see the doctor.
