What's Going Around - Ear Infections

We hear about ear infections all the time.

But sometimes they can present with different symptoms, so you may not realize that’s what’s happening with your child. If an ear infection is not diagnosed properly, it can lead to serious complications.

We’re hearing about an increased number of ear infections showing up in EmergiCare offices across Colorado Springs. Take a look at the symptoms and see if any of these apply to your child: decreased hearing, sore throat, dizziness, fussiness and difficulty sleeping. Common symptoms of ear infections also include vomiting, diarrhea and fever. You might also notice your child tugging at his/her ear.

Since the symptoms can be so varied, the best advice is to be seen by a doctor. That’s especially the case if the symptoms last longer than a day. If left untreated, ear infections can lead to permanently decreased hearing, speech or developmental delays and the spread of infection to nearby tissue, which includes bone and the brain.

But it may only take antibiotics to clear up what’s going on. The doctor will be able to decide what’s best for your child.
