We're headed into the unofficial start of summer with Memorial Day weekend. So it's time for an important reminder about sunscreen. That's because you don't want what starts going around this time of year... sunburns.
The physicians and staff with Colorado Springs Health Partners have talked to us about making this a priority. Here's what to do if you get a sunburn. First, avoid more exposure to the sun. Next, take a cool (not cold) bath or apply a cool, wet compress. Then, apply aloe or some other kind of "after sun" spray. Also, don’t forget to drink lots of fluids.
But the best thing you can do for a sunburn is not to get one in the first place. So here's what you do... always use sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher. The American Academy of Pediatrics says to apply it 30 minutes before you head outdoors so it absorbs into the skin. Reapply it every two hours, wear a hat and sunglasses. Stay in the shade when possible and avoid the strongest rays of the day between 10a.m. and 4p.m.
Keep these tips in mind and you'll be able to get outside and enjoy your holiday weekend.
