The Drowsy Chaperone (Don Ward)
Updated: 05/20/2013 - Two weekends left to catch one great show!
We've had some nice days this spring and if your kids have been outside and come in looking flushed, you're probably not concerned. But if those bright red cheeks don't go away, it may be what's going around this week... Fifth Disease.
That's what Dr. Michael Halenkamp is seeing in his office. He's with Colorado Springs Health Partners. Fifth disease is an illness caused by a virus that leads to a rash on the cheeks, arms and legs.
The first symptom would be those bright red cheeks. Dr. Halenkamp says it could look like your child has been slapped on both sides of the face. Soon after, a rash may appear on the arms, legs andmiddle of the body. Your child could also have a fever and joint pain.
Dr. Halenkamp says no specific treatment is required for fifth disease in kids. But call your health provider to rule out disorders that can cause similar symptoms.
This is mostly an illness found in kids. But pregnant women can get it. This can cause significant harm to your unborn baby. So visit with your doctor immediately if you think you've been exposed to this virus.
