What's Going Around

The situation with RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) in the area continues to be severe. More kids are still ending up in the hospital because of it.

That's the latest from Dr. Steven Reich. He's with Colorado Springs Health Partners in the southwest part of town. But he's been spending a lot of time at the hospital checking up on his young patients. He says he's seeing this virus in very young patients.

Remember the symptoms are very much like a cold. As we've reported, you'll notice a fever, coughing, a runny nose, a sore throat and an earache in your child. Your child could also have trouble breathing. So keep a close eye on your child because, if severe enough, these symptoms could result in hospitalization.

Also going around... The cause for a lot of coughing. Croup is going around.

That's according to Dr. Bridget Tewes. She's with Colorado Springs Health Partners as well.

Here's a look at the symptoms: an initial fever of about 101, hoarseness, a runny nose and then a barky cough that is usually worse at night. The cough lasts about 3 days.

Here's what you can do: use a humidifier, because dry air can make a cough worse. Give your child warm fluids if he/she is over 4-months old. Warm fluids can help relax vocal chords. Also, never let anyone smoke around your child - that can make croup worse.

In both of these cases, keep an eye on your child and stay in close contact with your physician.
