Every student in Colorado Springs will soon be back in class. An important part of heading back to school is getting up to date on your immunizations.
But there's been a lot of talk about vaccines lately. Some people are concerned about complications.
So, here’s some information from Dr. Charles Burke with Colorado Springs Health Partners.
He says vaccines work by preparing the body to fight illness, enabling the immune system to protect the body before disease strikes. Most vaccines use either dead bacteria or only part of the disease-causing bacteria. He says this makes it impossible to get the disease from the vaccines, and instead enables the body to create antibodies against it.
Dr. Burke reminds us all that childhood immunizations are a critical component in maintaining a child's health and well being.
Here's a look at what vaccines protect against: serious illnesses such as whooping cough, polio, and diphtheria, as well as less-threatening diseases such as chickenpox, measles, mumps, and rubella.
Dr. Burke says it is a myth that vaccines may cause a child to get sick or suffer from other things.
Because immunization schedules change periodically, it is important to consult with your pediatrician to make sure your child receives all vaccines at the appropriate age.
Also, don't forget to ask about the flu shot to keep your entire family protected.
