It is only August. School hasn't even begun for a lot of kids, but already there are reports of influenza cases popping up.
That's according to Nurse Practitioner Virginia Quiroz with Colorado Springs Health Partners.
Here's what to look for: a fever of over 101, body aches and a productive or dry cough. It can last 10-14 days. Any age can be affected.
If you catch it early, you can take antivirals like Tamiflu.
Otherwise, treatment is supportive... Tylenol, Motrin, fluids, rest and chicken soup.
The best prevention tip is to wash your hands.
On a similar note, Dr. Steven Reich, also with Colorado Springs Health Partners, has this recommendation for families.
He says call your doctor within the next six weeks to find out when their flu vaccine supplies are expected.
