No big surprises this time of year. What’s Going Around this week is pretty common.

The first… more strep throat… just like last week. But this time, it’s specifically in kids.

Dr. Caroline Rowlands is seeing an increase in her office. She works with Colorado Springs Health Partners on the Southwest side of town.

You’ll notice pain in the throat, especially when swallowing. There can be a fever or a rash. And strep is often accompanied by headache and nausea… but usually without coughing or runny nose.

Dr. Rowlands says antibiotics are needed. That will help the symptoms usually with 24-hours.

Also going around this week… the flu.

That’s happening on the North end of the Springs, according to Dr. Thomas Bartlett with Mountain View Medical Group.

Two cases he’s seen recently started with high fever (about 102-degrees), along with chills, severe muscle aches and pains, as well as nasal congestion, cough and headache.

If left untreated, the flu can progress to bronchitis and last up to two weeks.

Dr. Bartlett reminds you that there is a treatment. It is called Tamiflu. But you have to catch symptoms early to be able to use it.

Otherwise, prevention is key. Wash your hands, use hand sanitizer and get your flu shot.
