There’s a virus going around right now that we haven’t had reports of here on “What’s Going Around” in about two years.
Fifth disease is going around this week. That’s according to Dr. Michael Halenkamp in the Briargate area.
It’s called a disease, but it’s actually a virus. And it mostly affects kids.
Symptoms include a rash on the cheeks. It looks like you’ve been slapped. That can spread to the arms and legs. Also, look for fever, headache and joint pains.
Treatment for Fifth Disease is a lot like treating the flu. Get plenty of rest, plenty of fluids and take pain relievers as needed.
Also this week… more viral pharyngitis is going around.
It’s happening once again in the office of Dr. Tom Bartlett with Mountain View Medical Group. That’s on the north side of the Springs.
It starts off with a sore throat and a low-grade fever. You’ll also notice nasal congestion and a cough.
But, as we’ve reported before, antibiotics won’t help because this is viral.
So, use a decongestant and/or pain relievers. Gargling with salt water can also help.
Dr. Bartlett says symptoms last about a week.
