It’s been a huge week for a couple of nasty bugs going around.
The first is found on the North end of Colorado Springs. Dr. Tom Bartlett with Mountain View Medical Group is seeing patients for Viral Gastroenteritis.
And Dr. Bartlett says, not only have they seen a lot of it in their offices, he says he and his staff have also caught it.
Here’s what to look for: it starts with nausea and then progresses to dry heaves and vomiting. That is followed by diarrhea, a low-grade fever, flu-like muscle aches and chills.
Treatment is supportive. Use fluids, anti-nausea medication and anti-diarrhea medication.
Be aware, you can get dehydrated very quickly with this virus. Dr. Bartlett says he had two elderly patients who had to be hospitalized for IV fluids. So be extra careful.
Also going around this week… another nasty virus… this one of the Upper Respiratory variety. And it’s going around the Palmer Park area.
That’s according to Dr. Joyce Michael. She’s with the Mountain View Medical Group there.
Here’s what she tells us about the symptoms: This virus starts with a sore throat. And then you’re going to notice clear nasal discharge, headache and fatigue.
Dr. Michael says it is going to last about two weeks.
To help you deal with the symptoms, get lots of sleep and take an antihistamine for the discharge. But if you start to get a high fever (over 101 for more than two days) or if you start to have ear or tooth pain, seek medical care.
And don’t forget, frequent hand washing will help keep you from spreading both of these viruses to the folks around you.
