Dr. Caroline Rowlands on the Southwest side of Colorado Springs is seeing an increase in her office. She’s with Colorado Springs Health Partners.
The first thing you’re going to notice with croup is a barking cough. But there will also be loud breathing and possibly fever. A dangerous symptom to look out for is shortness of breath. That’s when you must get to a doctor.
Other than that, here’s what Dr. Rowlands recommends to help with the other symptoms. Steam can make a difference, like from a shower or humidifier. Cool air is also helpful. Sometimes your doctor can prescribe steroids, but no antibiotics since croup is a viral illness.
This is a very dangerous disease. So, keep a close eye on your child. Croup usually lasts around a week. And remember – it is very contagious.
