Three students from school district 11 were injured Wednesday morning in a bus stop fight involving an adult.
According to D-11 spokesperson Devra Ashby, the Galileo School of Math and Science students were waiting at a bus stop near the intersection of Delaware and San Miguel when they were approached by the adult. Ashby says she isn’t certain, but believes the adult lives in the neighborhood.
"The lady just walks up and starts cussing at a...big group of kids,” student Allan Osborn said.
He says the woman took the first swing after one of the kids was recording her on his phone.
"She started to walk away to the apartment building, and he was two feet behind her,” Osborn said. “Out of nowhere…she turns around and smacks him in the face.”
He said after that, the boy put his phone away and fought her. A group of kids ran over.
Eventually, a bus driver arrived and the kids jumped aboard. The driver took them to Queen Palmer Elementary, where three injured students were identified and taken to the hospital.
The three female students who tried to stop the fight were the ones who were hospitalized.
"In order to diffuse the situation, that was very quick thinking," Ashby said about the bus driver. "He knew he could take them over to another school location where we could have other resources and deal with the situation there in a more calm environment."
Ashby says two students have been charged with misdemeanor assault. They are currently suspended while the investigation is ongoing.
