Three D-11 Students Injured In Bus Stop Fight

Three students from school district 11 were injured Wednesday morning in a bus stop fight involving an adult.

According to D-11 spokesperson Devra Ashby, the Galileo School of Math and Science students were waiting at a bus stop near the intersection of Delaware and San Miguel when they were approached by the adult. Ashby says she isn’t certain, but believes the adult lives in the neighborhood.

"The lady just walks up and starts cussing at a...big group of kids,” student Allan Osborn said.

He says the woman took the first swing after one of the kids was recording her on his phone.

"She started to walk away to the apartment building, and he was two feet behind her,” Osborn said. “Out of nowhere…she turns around and smacks him in the face.”

He said after that, the boy put his phone away and fought her. A group of kids ran over.

Eventually, a bus driver arrived and the kids jumped aboard. The driver took them to Queen Palmer Elementary, where three injured students were identified and taken to the hospital.

The three female students who tried to stop the fight were the ones who were hospitalized.

"In order to diffuse the situation, that was very quick thinking," Ashby said about the bus driver. "He knew he could take them over to another school location where we could have other resources and deal with the situation there in a more calm environment."

Ashby says two students have been charged with misdemeanor assault. They are currently suspended while the investigation is ongoing.

That lady should have never come out and yell at those kids. She is the adult, get over the noise with the kids. A bus pulls right up in front of my house, and I do not bit.. about it. Grow up lady. Those kids should have never gotten expelled, That lady should be charged with assault.

I just want to point out that in our city, there are many children that did not learn English as their first language and this is the main factor contributing to poor grammar and spelling skills. This is not a child's fault. I don't think we can consciously blame the children for what has happened. I think that every child just does the best with what they are given. If they have not had the opportunities to learn respect or right from wrong, it is not their fault: it is the failure of the adult that cares for them. Let's stop attacking children and get the whole story first before we continue to bash on everyone involved. It's unfortunate that anyone - especially children - have been hurt. That should be the focus and topic of our discussion - don't you think?

I can see your point but let me ask you this. At what point does a child become able to know right from wrong on thier own? Is it the 18 year mark when they legally become an adult? Is that when they suddenly wake up and realize that what they might be doing may not be the right thing? Kids in middle school know perfectly well if they are doing something they shouldn't be. I don blame the parents but when talkign about children, "it is not their fault" BS

I am the mother of one of the children that was taken to the hospital and my concern is that the woman was not charged for her actions and yet the boys got punished for protecting them selves...that woman has NO right to be putting her hands on that boy and my child and the other two children that were taken to the hospital had told us parents and the police that the woman hit them as well so my intentions are to try to make sure this woman is charged for her actions.

there where no adults involved. the kids where saying she as in the girl they we're beating caused the fight. not the lady who came in after the fight started screaming at the kids to stop saying she was going to call the police. if know the facts can see the news reporter confused everyone. the facts are kids got in fight when no adults were around.

So it was in fact confirmed that she was under the influence of "meth" at the time of the altercation?

To dexter: i don't get off from my work until08:00. I never gripe about the trash trucks, or the onslaught of outdoor power tools such as leaf blowers, lawn mowers, etc. it is how i support my family. If you think 07:00 should be when we all wake up, don't ask for help from any emergency providers in the middle of the night.
