Sheriff Offers Idea To Protect Schools

Updated: Fri 5:28 AM, Jan 11, 2013

After the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School a lot of people have been looking for ways to ensure safety in schools.

Recently, El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa put an offer out on the table to assist school districts with gun training, and to waive the concealed handgun fee for teachers and administrators. This is obviously just the first step in initiating the idea to allow teachers and administrators to carry concealed handguns. As of now, Colorado law only allows security officers to carry on campus. For anyone else who has a permit to carry, when on campus, the gun must be in a compartment in a locked vehicle.

There are several people and parents happy to hear about the offer and idea, whereas other parents think it is potentially dangerous.

"At least they'll be protected, especially in a situation where someone comes in the school and they're armed,” said Susin Taylor. “They can immediately take care of business."

"I don't think teachers should have guns,” said Glen Flaherty. “I think that's a terrible idea."

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office says they expect to talk more on this topic in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, Falcon District 49 unanimously voted Thursday night to approve the arming of their safety and emergency coordinator.
