PUEBLO, Colo. Vandalism at a Pueblo elementary school forced the district to close the school for the day.

Students at Ben Franklin Elementary School in District 60 were sent home from school Tuesday morning due to damage caused by fire extinguishers that went off inside the school. The fire extinguishers typically hang on the wall.

Police say someone broke into the building overnight and sprayed the fire extinguishers in the hallway of the school. Several items were also taken.

The district says it closed the school for the rest of the day as a precaution because particles that get in the air from the fire extinguishers can be an irritant for people with respiratory issues.

Police are investigating the incident as a burglary. At this time they have not identified a suspect.

Students will have school as normal on Wednesday.
