A teacher at Otero Elementary School in Harrison School District 2 has been charged with sexual assault on a child.

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office says Carmen Centennial, 39, was arrested Monday night on several sexual assault related charges. He was held on a $10,000 bond, but has bonded out as of Tuesday night.

The victim is a 15-year-old girl who is not related to Centennial. Investigators say the sexual abuse happened from December 2012 until March 2013.

A spokesperson from D-2 confirmed Tuesday Centennial is an English Learning Development teacher at Otero. He began working at the school in January of 2013. Parents of Otero students were notified of the investigation Tuesday.

"I wanted to throw up," said Corina. "I don't want my child around that. I'm sure she doesn't want her daughter around that."

Centennial's accuser does not attend a D-2 school and was never one of Centennial's students. The district is cooperating with the sheriff's investigation.

"I'm not surprised by it," said Angela, another parent whose daughter attends Otero. "Whether it's our school or a school across town, it's not surprising at all."

Fort Knox confirmed that Centennial served in the Army for 20 years, with his last assignment at Fort Carson. He got out of the Army in June 2012.

Centennial is currently on administrative leave from Otero as the case is investigated.
