More high school students enrolled in math and science classes. Increasing numbers are seeking online learning opportunities. Fewer want or able to find a job after school.
Those are just some of the changes under way at the nation's high schools described in a report released in May by the U.S. Department of Education.
The annual "Condition of Education" report found a number of shifts in how students are learning and what they are doing with their extra time.
There has been an increase of more than 1 million students taking a distance education class, most of those online, within the last decade.
The number of students working after school, meanwhile, has dropped, from 32 percent in 1990 to 16 percent in 2010.
