Local School Celebrates 140 Years

The Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind celebrated its 140th birthday Tuesday.

The celebration took place in the school gym off Pikes Peak Avenue in Colorado Springs. Students and staff were there for a balloon launch and reception.

The school superintendent said it was a very big day for the school.

"We decided with it being the 140th anniversary of the founding of the school it would be fun to do something to really celebrate the day with our students, and what's better than having a birthday party."

The school was originally the Colorado Institute for the Education of Mutes, but was renamed in 1893.

The school currently serves more than 500 students statewide.
