5th Grader Needs Help to Get Vision Device

PUEBLO, Colo. A young 5th grader from Belmont Elementary in Pueblo is asking for the public's help. Tatzia Garcia suffers from a rare incurable vision disorder, where she has to use a vision device to see in the classroom. Despite, the challenges Tatzia has a 3.9 GPA.

Currently, Tatzia is given the vision tools in the classroom to be successful, but her family says she doesn't have any of those tools at home.

Tatzia's older sister, Megan Garcia, says getting the right vision equipment is important to Tatzia's future success. "She can't really see what the teacher is talking about. For instance, if they said go to page 59, she has no idea. She has to find the book that they're talking about then she has o try and figure out how to get that number to get to the page," said Megan.

Right now, Pueblo School District pays for Tatzia to use a device in class. It acts as a giant magnify glass so she can she everything the other students see. The School District is working to get Tatzia a different and more portable device that she can use next year in middle school.

Belmont Principal, Stephanie Smith, says "We know that going into
middle school, that's going to be very important for her to be able to carry it from class to class. This year, she's has a portable device, but it's still larger."

At school, Smith says many of Tatzia's classmates help her carry the device and books because of the weight.

The family hopes they can raise enough money for Tatzia to have one at home too, so her learning continues. The device the family wants to buy is called a "VisioBook" and it costs an upwards of $3,000.

Tatzia's mother, Sheryl Garcia, says it won't end after they purchase the "VisioBook." "There's just a lot of equipment throughout her process in life that she needs. So we just want to be able to provide what we can for her," said Sheryl.

Tatzia's family has started a fundraiser called "Tools for Tatzia".
