A single-car accident on Highway 96 has left a woman hospitalized.

Dawn Martinez, 36, was traveling westbound on the highway in the direction of Boone, Colorado. She attempted to pass two vehicles at once, when she saw oncoming eastbound traffic heading directly toward her.

To avoid a head-on collision, Martinez swerved off the road, hitting a pole and then rolling. The car caught on fire, but Martinez managed to escape and crawl to safety. A man at the scene was able to put the fire out, but left the scene before state troopers could speak with him, so he has not been identified.

Sgt. Wallace Laphrop with the Colorado State Patrol described Martinez's injuries as "moderate to serious, probably closer to serious." She was air-lifted to St. Mary Corwin Medical Center in Pueblo.

Laphrop said Martinez will receive a citation for an improper pass.
