An investigation into the homicide of a homeless man found in the bottom of Fountain Creek has resulted in two people being taken into custody.

The names of the victim and suspect were released Friday night.

Friday, Pueblo police were tipped off by several anonymous calls that a body had been spotted near Fountain Creek, just east of the police shooting range. The area is frequently used as a camping area for transients.

Police went to the area and located the body of a transient, later identified as 64-year-old Michael Richards. The Pueblo County coroner, James Kramer, said Richards suffered blunt-force trauma to his head and sustained asphyxiation "consistent with strangulation."

The suspects, 54-year-old Richard Sheppard and 55-year-old Hugh Smith, are also transients. Both were residing in the camp at the time of the homicide.
