Three skunks found in Pueblo have tested positive for rabies, according to the Pueblo Health Department. They are the first skunks to test positive in Pueblo County this year.

The skunks were found at these locations:

  • Garland Road on the Mesa

  • Paloma Place and Roselawn Road in the Salt Creek neighborhood

  • 2400 block of Winnipeg Street west of Lake Minnequa

The Health Department says no humans came into contact with the rabid skunks. Pets in the areas were up-to-date with their vaccines.

It is unusual for skunks to be out during the day, the health department says. If someone does see a skunk during the day, or otherwise acting abnormally, it is important to report the animal to the
U.S. Department of Agricultures’ local Wildlife Specialist, 719-250-9035.

For any other questions or concerns contact Pueblo Animal Services by calling 719-544-3005.

Everyone is also reminded to check that their pets’ vaccinations are current.

Well, tell us please, what activity by the skunks,or what about them, brought them to the attention of authorities. Are we to suppose that they posed no harm to humans or wildlife or domestic animals before being discovered. So what gives afterall? Or, all 3 rabid skunks this time of year of no concern? What should we learn, without more, from this non-story?

I thought they meant our county commissioners or city manager at first...
