Ten people remain in the hospital Wednesday night, injured in the massive theater shooting in Aurora. Now local teens have created a project to raise money for the victims and their families.
While most teenagers spend their summer vacation relaxing, three Pueblo teens are using the summer to make a difference. After hearing news of the Aurora Theater shooting they felt compelled to help.
“It’s amazing to me how someone can go in and take so many different peoples lives and not know what it’s going to do for the families and not care,” Devin Deherrera said.
Deherrera and her friends created t-shirts to honor the victims and incorporate the Batman Dark Night theme.
“We tried to go for the ribbons, like the breast cancer ribbons and then Batman’s colors are black and yellow,” Deherrera explained.
Deherrera says within a few days of selling the shirts around town and on-line, they’ve managed to reach people even across the country.
“We’ve got a lady in California who wants to buy one of our shirts,” Deherrera said.
On the back of the shirt is a poem written by fellow creator, Erin Medina.
“Families struggling every day, loved ones hurt and taken away, though we all wanted you to stay, we’ll never forget those taken that day.”
The money raised in the t-shirt sale will go towards building a memorial plaque for the victims. The teens say they’ll give the remaining proceeds to the victims’ families. T-shirts are $15 dollars, for more information visit: http://auroraremembers.org
