Special Olympic Athletes Participate In 'Torch Run'

Updated: Wed 10:01 PM, May 23, 2012

One group of kids in Southern Colorado got to feel like Olympic athletes on Tuesday as they ran through town carrying an official torch.

The kids are Special Olympic athletes from our community. They wore big smiles for the annual “Torch Run” with members of our local law enforcement agencies. Together they proudly carried the “Flame of Hope” through the streets of Pueblo. The route started from the Convention Center, wove through downtown with the horse Police Patrol and then to Red Lobster. After that the more serious law enforcement runners carried the torch up to the El Paso County line to hand it off to Sheriff Officials in Fountain and El Paso County. Members of the Pueblo Police department, Sheriff’s office, the Department of Corrections and Colorado State Patrol all came out to show their support.

“We team up with Special Olympics to raise awareness and raise money for Special Olympic athletes such as these guys right here,” Pueblo County Sheriff Kirk Taylor said.

The flame of hope will travel over 1500 miles and through more than two dozen counties in Colorado.

Special Olympics Colorado provides year round athletic competitions in 22 Olympic-type sports for children and adults with developmental disabilities.
