Rash Of Armed Robberies Rattles Pueblo

A Southern Colorado community is being hit hard by a rash of armed robberies. And they’ve all happened since the start of the new year.

Pueblo police say they’ve had 12 armed robberies in just the first 10 days of 2013, including two that happened Thursday night.

Now police are asking for your help identifying the suspects.

They’ve posted surveillance pictures of the suspects on their Facebook page, in hopes that someone will recognize one of the suspects: Click here to see.

The suspects’ heights in the photos range from 5-foot-10 to 6 feet, weight between 150-170 pounds. The suspect leaves the scene on foot.

It is a rise in crime that is rattling members of the community.

"It worries me to really go anywhere anymore,” said Catherine Martinez, who was born and raised in Pueblo.

11 News talked to one of the victims of an armed robbery, who says she is still shaken up.

"I see him, with the gun,” said Elaine Mascarenas.

It’s been over a week, but Mascarenas is still haunted by the memories of a terrifying experience at her job.

"When I talk about it, it hurts,” she said.

Mascarenas was robbed at gunpoint at the Smoker Friendly off Pueblo Boulevard on January 2.

"He held the gun and said 'Hurry up, hurry, I want the money.' I said 'Okay.' I walked to the register and gave him the money,” said Mascarenas. “When he walked out, he says, 'If you come by the door, I'm gonna shoot you.'"

Pueblo police are now asking for all of our help, because this was just one of 12 armed robberies they’ve had in Pueblo since the ringing in of the New Year.

Four were personal robberies, the rest businesses.

Detectives believe the same suspect that robbed the Smoker Friendly is connected to at least three of the robberies, including: Pueblo Records and Tapes back on December 30 and Adolfo’s Mexican Restaurant January 1. The Smoker Friendly was hit the next day.

In one case he used a machete to get cash from the clerk. He also fired a shot inside the Mexican restaurant before he took off with the entire cash register.
