Pueblo Woman Gets 20 Years For Killing Husband

A Pueblo woman who admitted killing her husband in 2009 and burying his body in a shallow grave has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Twenty-six-year-old Sonia Mitchell told the court during her sentencing hearing that she endured years of physical and emotional abuse. She said she was sexually assaulted by her husband, 26-year-old Brian Swartz, the day she killed him. The Pueblo Chieftain reported that she said she "snapped."

District Judge David Crockenberg said Friday that Mitchell's behavior after the death made him doubt her story. Mitchell initially told police that Swartz had been kidnapped by Mexican nationals.

In June, Mitchell pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the heat of passion. She faced up to 32 years.

Its clearly stated in the marriage contract "till death do we part" she was just following her end of the agreement.

If she had reported prior abusive treatment to the authorities I might believe her. Another pitiful excuse. If you're dumb enough to stay in a relationship like that, stop crying about it if you're not going to do anything about it. Some women are smart enough to kill their abusive spouse and come up with a, sometime outrageous excuse, like this woman did and even go to the lengths to hide the bodies, but they don't have enough brains to just leave. I have no money or nowhere to go is about a lame excuse if I've ever heard one. Well, you have a place to go now honey and just think of the about all the abuse you'll be getting now in prison honey. These so called abuse victims are the biggest cowards I have ever seen! Always an excuse, use your brains ladies and gentlemen and grow some you know whats for once.

You gotta love today's society. She drops the abuse card and the brainwashed minions run to her defense. Maybe she was the abuser. Maybe the victim wanted a divorce. Maybe she found someone else and wanted her husband out of the picture. We don't know if that man ever said a mean word to her, let alone hit her. However, we know for a fact that she killed him. Let's get some perspective!

Abused? This is another classic case of play the victim and you'll receive a lesser sentence. How many men go without reporting being abused? This needs to stop!! and women need to take responsibility just like men do. Throw the book at them and they'll quit playing the victim card.

Battered woman syndrome is supposed to protect women like this the most she can be legally sentenced is limited to TEN-years. her defense dropped the ball. TESSA needs to help her out.

Bless her heart! Only she and her deceased husband know the truth. There is one thing that can be said: victims of Domestic violence are very unique in their ways of hiding and concealing the abuse from others. And, may deny itially thatthe abuse occurred, but later retract their story when it is too late. That's one of the reasons why victims in these situations aren't believed and trusted within the legal community. My thoughts are with her family and the deceased family as well. And if there is any children, may God watch over them.

The article didn't say how she killed him (gun, knife, ?) but, from the look in her photo, she could have just "Uglied" him to death.
