Residents at a Pueblo apartment complex are relieved that a standoff ended with two arrests--and no gunshots.
Neighbors clapped and cheered when the second of two men wanted by police, who had been reluctant to exit the building, surrendered peacefully after being coaxed by officers on scene. The first suspect came out voluntarily.
The residents said they were happy to see the second suspect walk out the door without putting up a fight.
The situation began Tuesday afternoon after police received a tip that
a man wanted for allegedly throwing his girlfriend out of a moving vehicle, who has been identified as 23-year-old Roy Gonzales, was at an apartment complex on the 2600 block of Sprague.
Police knocked on the door of an apartment and didn't get an answer, prompting a standoff.
While waiting for SWAT to arrive, a man later identified as 27-year-old Geoffrey Archuletta left the apartment and was arrested on a warrant for failure to appear on a traffic violation.
When SWAT got to the scene, they tried to contact the second person in the apartment. For a short time, he resisted coming out, and yelled at law enforcement through an upstairs window. Authorities were eventually able to negotiate with him and get him to leave the building peacefully.
Once detained, authorities realized that the suspect was not the man they had been looking for, Roy Gonzales, but one with a similar name: Ray Gonzales. Ray Gonzales, 28, did have two warrants for his arrest, and was taken into custody for failure to comply-third degree assault and failure to comply-restraining order violation.
Ray Gonzales and Archuletta were booked in the Pueblo County Jail. Records indicate that neither is in custody as of Wednesday morning.
