A Pueblo police officer has started a new community outreach program called "Cops for Help."
Officer Bernadette Lambert started it on March 1. She works nights, and says she responds to calls where children don't have basic necessities like shoes, diapers or blankets.
Lambert decided to start collecting items to help out. She's collected things from tooth brushes and toilet paper to food and even clothes.
She keeps the items at one of the Pueblo police substations so if an officer finds someone in need during their shift, they have a resource to help out.
"This is my community and I want to make it a better place. I want to make it a safer place, " Bernadette said. "I work the graveyard [shift]...so I know the type of crime and the type of things people go through."
The following is a list of requested items: Clothing of all sizes, male and female; non-perishable food items; shoes; blankets; laundry soap; pillows; shampoo & Conditioner; sheets; toilet paper; tooth brushes; deodorant; socks/underwear; diapers; coats/jackets; baby wipes.
Donations can be dropped off at the Pueblo Police Department lobby located at 200 S. Main St., or at the east side substation located at 731 E. 4th St. Arrangements can be made for some pickups by calling Officer Shelly Taylor at 719-553-2418.
