A Pueblo man has pleaded guilty to a charge of fatal child abuse after the death of his 5-month-old son almost two years ago.
The Pueblo Chieftain reported Thursday that 25-year-old Anthony Angel faces 16 to 25 years in prison at his sentencing hearing on Nov. 11.
Angel pleaded guilty to child abuse resulting in death. In exchange, prosecutors dropped murder and assault charges.
Angel was arrested Nov. 21, 2011 after his son, Antonio, died in an Aurora hospital. The infant wasn't breathing when he arrived at the hospital, and was on life support before the decision was made to take him off.
Pueblo police were alerted after the child's death.
Court documents indicate that Angel was arrested for the death because medical experts said the child's fatal injuries would have rapidly appeared at a time when he was alone with the child.
The autopsy showed severe blunt trauma to the baby’s brain, and bleeding.
