A motorcyclist was ejected from his vehicle after colliding with Suzuki Sidekick, resulting in serious injuries and shutting down a major highway for a few hours.

Both the motorcycle and Suzuki Sidekick were headed westbound on Highway 50 at 12:20 a.m. Monday when the accident occurred, three miles west of Pueblo. State troopers say the motorcyclist lost control when he was trying to avoid colliding with the Sidekick. The motorcycle rolled on its side, causing it to collide with the back of the Sidekick, then went off the road.

At this point, the motorcyclist was ejected. Troopers say he was wearing a helmet, but still sustained serious injuries. He has been identified as 45-year-old Paul Duffy.

The driver of the Sidekick, 40-year-old Daniel Pennington, was uninjured.

Troopers say alcohol and drug use are not suspected as factors in the crash, but are investigating the motorcyclist's speed as a possible factor.

Highway 50 was reopened by 4 a.m.
