Authorities say one of three siblings who were part of a crime spree and nationwide manhunt planned to escape from a Colorado jail.

They say Dylan Stanley Dougherty got out of his cell through a plumbing access panel, and got a note to his sister telling her he was going to break her out of jail.

He faces charges of conspiracy to escape and possession of contraband for the alleged escape plan discovered during the Jan. 10 search.

According to a Huerfano County arrest affidavit, deputies found a homemade knife in his cell. The knife, or shank, was made of metal and was about 8 inches long. The sharpened end was wrapped in cloth to make a handle.

The shank was found hidden under Dougherty's bunk. Letters addressed to the FBI and the jail staff were also found in his cell.

The letter addressed to the jail said, "I have enjoyed staying here, so don't take any of this personal."

In his letter to the FBI, Dougherty said he was planning to leave behind the tools he would use in his escape. According to the affidavit, that letter described in detail the tools and items found in his cell.

The document goes on to say that a hatch door hiding access to plumbing in Dougherty's cell was tampered with and pried back. Behind the door, the insulation was torn away and a detention officer was able to climb along the plumbing to the ceiling where they found footprints leading over to the female cells.

There, they found a letter Dylan had written to his sister Lee Grace Dougherty. The note told her to have her things ready because he planned to access the jail's control room through the ceiling. He allegedly planned to drop down onto the detention staff, tie them up, steal their keys, and walk out with his sister.

On Jan. 12, Dylan Dougherty was transferred to the Pueblo County Jail. The Huerfano County Sheriff has said he will likely remain there throughout his trial because it is a more secure facility.
