Black Hills Reviews Options For Getting More Power

PUEBLO, Colo. (AP) -- Black Hills Energy is looking at its options now that Colorado regulators have denied its request to build a third, natural gas-fired turbine at its Pueblo airport generating station.

To help reduce air pollution, regulators in 2010 approved Black Hills' plan to retire two coal-fired power generation units in Canon City and to acquire 42 megawatts of replacement power. The company later proposed building a $100 million, 88-megawatt, natural gas-fired turbine at its Pueblo airport generating station.

An administrative law judge ruled last year that Black Hills failed to justify the need for 88 megawatts of capacity, and the PUC issued its final order denying the request in April.

Black Hills says it plans to file a plan by July 30 identifying an alternative.
