Hooked - (Stacia Naquin)
Updated: 10/11/2013 - I'm SO CLOSE to being able to do a pull-up. So my trainer introduced something new into my training.
It was an historic trip around the world, put on hold by a terrible accident in Southern Colorado.
English adventurer Jason Lewis is the first person to circumnavigate the entire globe by using only human power. He traveled through 37 countries and across three oceans. He endured many hardships along the way, like being hit by a car and a crocodile attack. A big part of his story took place in Pueblo, where he hopes to inspire others.
We all wish to see the world, but one man decided to do it: take a trip around the entire globe.
“Hey I’ve got this amazing idea...I’m bored at my job, which we can all relate to in some degree, and I’ve got this amazing idea that hasn’t been done before," said Lewis.
Lewis trekked 46,000 miles using only human power, from biking in Thailand to pedal boating across the Atlantic.
“I had to swim some of the rivers in southeast Asia, like the Mekong River, because there was no bridge.”
But his plan to rollerblade across the Untied States was cut short when he was hit by a car in Pueblo.
“I was on Highway 50 up by the university and the first thing I knew was this incredible sense of force hitting me from behind.”
The crash broke both of his legs, and during the nine months of recovery, Lewis debated giving up. But he didn’t, instead using his time off talking to local students about his journey.
“I went to schools in my wheelchair, and I got to see how talking about the adventure suddenly would light up in the eyes of third, fourth and fifth graders."
After completing his 13-year journey, Lewis hopes his message will continue to inspire others.
“If you have a dream or aspiration like I had, then you should go for it...I guess that’s been my message throughout the circumnavigation."
Lewis has just finished writing about his adventure in a book called "The Expedition."
