Former Classmate Of Teen Killed In Pueblo Crash Speaks

Updated: Tue 5:34 AM, May 29, 2012

Two teenagers have died in a rollover crash in Southern Colorado.
Five teenagers reportedly in a stolen car were trying to get away from State Patrol troopers when they were trying to pull them over.

Troopers say the driver, 18 year old Cameron Montoya, ran two red lights and then lost control on a sharp curve. The SUV rolled and ejected three of the five teens. The accident happened just before 2 a.m. along Pueblo Boulevard and Wildhorse Road in Pueblo. The driver and 16-year-old Chantel Ortiz both died.

"It's just sad seeing all these young lives getting lost like that,” Carlos Castillo said.

Montoya's former classmate, Carlos Castillo, is saddened that his friend didn't just stop for authorities.

"I would never think something like this would happen to him. He was such a quiet guy, never did nothing wrong."

State troopers also uncovered a handgun in the vehicle.

"There was a handgun in the vehicle too, so he might've got scared, and that's why he took off,” Castillo said.

The other passengers, two 14-year-old females and one 15-year-old female were taken to Parkview Medical Center in Pueblo with serious injuries. Troopers say they don't know if drugs or alcohol were factors in this crash.

Flowers were placed along the stretch of Wildhorse Road as a memorial for the two young lives that were lost Sunday night.
